Continually refreshed by the fountain of God's love in Christ Jesus, we of the
Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church are sent by the Holy Spirit to direct that flow
into the lives of our neighbors so that they too might be refreshed.
ELCA Presiding Bishop To Visit Christ Lutheran Church
The Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will visit
Christ Lutheran Church, Gettysburg, Penn., and preside at worship on Palm Sunday, April 13, 2014.
Eaton, who serves as the chief pastor for the largest Lutheran church body in America, will lead services of
Holy Communion at 8:15am and 10:30am at Christ Church, located at 30 Chambersburg Street in Gettysburg.
“It is a joy and honor to welcome Bishop Eaton to Gettysburg” noted Christ Lutheran Pastor and ELCA Church Council
member Stephen Herr. “Gettysburg’s role in the history of Lutheranism in
America has been a significant one. Both Gettysburg Seminary and
Gettysburg College are among the oldest Lutheran higher education institutions.
Christ Lutheran Church, founded in 1836 and once known as the College Church, served as a place of worship and support
for both communities. All three institutions were founded by
Samuel Simon Schmucker.
Between the Sunday services Bishop Eaton will discuss the many ministries of the ELCA, which is one of the largest
Christian denominations in the United States, with about 4 million members in nearly 10,000 congregations across the
50 states and in the Caribbean region. Bishop Eaton is the fourth presiding
bishop of the ELCA and was elected to a six year term at the 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly in Pittsburgh.
Eaton’s travel to Gettysburg also coincides with a meeting of the presidents of the eight ELCA Seminaries, including
Gettysburg Seminary President Michael Cooper-White and Luther Seminary President-Elect Robin Steinke.
Steinke is the current Dean at Gettysburg Seminary and will assume the presidency at Luther in
St. Paul, Minnesota on June 1. Both Cooper-White and Steinke are members at
Christ Lutheran Church.
Bishop Eaton earned her Master of Divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School (Cambridge, Mass.) and
Bachelor of Arts degree in music education from the College of Wooster
(in Wooster, Ohio). Ordained in 1981, she served several parishes
in the Northeastern Ohio Synod and was elected bishop of that synod in 2006 and reelected in 2013. Her husband, the
Rev. T. Conrad Selnick, an Episcopal priest, is the Vice President for Advancement and Church Relations at Bexley Seabury
Federation (based in location).
All worship services at Christ Church are open to the public and the congregation welcomes visitors to worship on
Palm/Passion Sunday and all other Sundays. Palm Sunday is the traditional
beginning of Holy Week for Christians around the world. It is a week they
recall Jesus’ death and resurrection as the revelation of God’s triumph over sin and death.
